Legacy - A Downtown Denver ECE
During the February 18th ECE, we traveled around downtown Denver. Our trip began by going to the History Colorado Center and then to Civic Center Park. At the History Colorado Center, we learned about the year 1968 and how it affected dramatic losses in the United States of America. This time period was when Martin Luther King Junior advocated for equality between races, the flower child movement thrived, and protests against the Vietnam War were common.
After walking around the 1968 exhibit, we went to the Scholastic Art Competition exhibit, where the work of the competition’s finalists was displayed. This was an amazing experience because two of the DAT’s students, Chana Weiss and Avital Rotbart, had art work in this exhibit. The artwork there was beautiful, creative, and a gift to look at. All of the students and faculty were so proud of Chana and Avital for their accomplishments! “It was awesome seeing Chana and Avitals' art hanging up in gallery. Good job guys!” said Sophomore student, Tova Narrowe. It was such a wonderful opportunity to go to an exhibit that our peers have contributed to.
Once we looked through all the artwork, we walked to Civic Center Park, which is across from the capitol building. When we got there, we had lunch and divided into groups. Each group got a set of pictures of sculptures to find around this park. We went to each monument and learned about the legacy of the statue. One monument that stood out to me was a statue of an Indian sitting on a horse. This stood out to me because the Indian’s expression was concerned and willing to do anything to protect his land. This statue illustrated the difficult times during Western expansion and how they affected so many Native Americans.
Overall this ECE taught me the significance of important historical events and figures and how their legacies have affected me today in my life.
