On September 11, DAT High School’s Model United Nations team attended their first event together. For the past two years, DAT HS’s Model United Nations team has attended a Counterterrorism Education Learning Lab (CELL) presentation to keep informed about current counterterrorism efforts. This year, the team attended a 9/11 remembrance event. The event, hosted by Governor John Hickenlooper and Mayor Michael Hancock, began with a 9/11 remembrance ceremony. After the Colorado National Guard, Chaplain Andy Meverden, and Rabbi Joseph Black emphasized the day's significance to the United States of America, the UN team watched a conversation between General David H. Petraeus and Andy Alexander that highlighted current terrorism in the world.

As Alexander moderated the discussion, Petraeus shared his opinions on the current situation in Iraq. During his 37 years of service in the US Military, Petraeus has developed opinions and ideas about terrorist activity. He explained that he believes that the terrorist group, sometimes known as ISIS ( the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria), is extremely powerful. He said that we must help the victims fight against those terrorists.

Attending discussions such as the ones at The CELL strengthens our Model UN team by providing them with an insight into current events. Being an active participant in Yeshiva University’s Model United Nations is dependant on one’s understanding of world events and their effects around the globe.

Over the next few months, the Model UN team will be learning more about current events to prepare themselves for their competition.
